The Potency of Collaborative Clinical Knowledge Governance

A Catalonian CASE STUDY for CKM and CatSalut

The CatSalut Research team faced significant challenges before implementing CKM:

Before the integration of Clinical Knowledge Manager (CKM), the development and tracking of clinical models faced significant challenges. The team lacked a dedicated platform, relying instead on network storage, online openEHR editors, and email for communication.
Lack of Verification

Before integrating Clinical Knowledge Manager (CKM), the team did not have any platform for the collaborative development and version tracking of clinical models, relying on network storage, online openEHR editors, and email for communication.

Complex Template Visualisation

This resulted in a lack of verification of clinical models, missing visualisation of large and complex templates and the tedious task of version tracking when working with a group of internal and external developers.

Tedious Version Tracking

When the team saw the international potential of CKM to reduce errors and enhance the traceability in the development of clinical models, adoption was a no-brainer.

Let’s unpack the key benefits that implementing CKM brought to the CatSalut team:

  • Introduction of a specialised repository of clinical models solving development and publication needs in a single platform.
  • The possibility of sharing development and engaging in an open discussion about the models.
  • Rolling out peer review of templates and archetypes, executed by professionals from different fields, results in better models for a better working health care system.
  • CKM is a solid model repository and version control tool.
  • CKM REST API enables the CatSalut team to develop in their own software tools and access the repository content directly further optimised their workflow.
  • Being a part of the openEHR community and publishing clinical knowledge models,
collaborating to achieve a clinical data standard at a global scale. They enjoyed efficient customer support at their fingertips

The mission of CatSalut, a healthcare facilities and medical research group, is to guarantee comprehensive, quality health care to Catalonians. They aim to provide health care services to the entire population of Catalonia, Spain; efficiently and effectively.

Catalonia is moving towards a future in which concepts such as patient-centric, data-centriclongitudinal electronic health records, integrated care, open platform, and clinical knowledge management become routine practice. A future in which the current barriers of interoperability are overcome to move towards common semantics for the clinical knowledge domain. All in all, with the idea to systematically harness the power of data and deliver patient-centric care.

More about CKM

This sophisticated tool allows domain experts to:

  • share data models,
  • contribute to modelling discussions, and
  • provide reviews anytime, anywhere.

CKM implements advanced governance workflows allowing high-quality data models and associated documentation for clinical system implementation to be published. CKM manages data models developed using openEHR’s two-tier modelling where archetypes based on the openEHR reference model are combined into templates that represent the data requirements for specific use cases. Based on a standard architecture for future-proof health information, openEHR offers a path from silos of data to longitudinal, patient-centred care, for life.

The purpose of the service is to provide a Clinical Knowledge Manager solution for the deployment, management, and publication of clinical knowledge artefacts, based on the openEHR standard.

openEHR is a non-profit organisation that publishes technical standards for an Electronic Health Record (EHR) platform along with domain-developed clinical models to define content.

Clinical Knowledge Manager (CKM), is a comprehensive repository and collaboration environment for managing openEHR archetypes, templates, terminology subsets and related artefacts.
